Scalable Connection Technology for Photonic Integrated Circuits
For the cooling and control of ions in an ion trap quantum processor, lasers with a very narrow linewidth are necessary. The integration of lasers onto an ion trap processor chip therefore represents a central basic technology for the development of quantum computers and other applications of quantum technologies.
This photonic integration is being researched, among others, in the QVLS-iLabs project Sci-Line. The integration requires high precision in the alignment of the individual electro-optical components. A novel laser-based process is to be used for this purpose. The photonic component is already in its target position in the x and y directions and is then transferred onto the component using a laser pulse.
The laser-based transfer process is currently being developed worldwide and is particularly interesting for the simultaneous transfer of many (up to 100,000) photonic components. The goal of Sci-Line is therefore a deep understanding of the process so that different photonic components such as waveguides or lasers can be transferred.
