Integration of Electronic Components in a Glass Interposer with Sapphire-Like Thermal Conductivity
The INTEGER project focuses on glass-based interposers.
But what are interposers and why would one want to manufacture them from glass?
Interposers are electrical interfaces for connecting and distributing the electrical signals from a chip to a standardized interface. The chip can be, for example, an ion trap processor. Compared to the industrial standard silicon, glass offers many advantages, such as lower dielectric losses in the radio frequency and microwave range and its optical transparency. However, a decisive disadvantage is its low thermal conductivity. Ion trap processors typically operate at cryogenic temperatures (T=4K), so heat must be efficiently dissipated here. In the INTEGER project, different methods are being researched to improve the thermal conductivity of glass-based interposers and thus make them usable for ion trap processors.
