QBatt
Magnetic Camera for Quality Control and Selection of Batteries for Electric Vehicles
The rapidly progressing climate change worldwide, with increasingly threatening devastating consequences, has led to ambitious emission reduction targets, which must largely be achieved through accelerated and sustainable technological developments and economic activities. A key role in this is played by the transition from fossil-fuel-powered to battery-powered drives in the transport and mobility sector. As a result of widespread electrification, developments in technology and production capacities in the field of high-performance and high-energy-density batteries can be observed worldwide. For the sustainable use of resources, the topics of circular economy, recycling and a longer usage phase, alongside long-term quality assurance and the avoidance of rejects, are becoming increasingly important. The measurement methods and systems necessary for this form the essential basis from material extraction to recycling throughout the entire period of use. Existing promising measurement systems are often too slow, too expensive, too prototypical and unable to determine the condition and quality of relevant batteries at the required scale under harsh manufacturing conditions.
This is where the QVLS-iLabs project QBatt came in. The aim is to transfer a measurement system from laboratory research into industrial application and adapt it to the necessary specific requirements. This involves a quantum sensor solution for measuring current density in batteries. The measurement system is intended to be a magnetic camera based on highly sensitive quantum sensors (optically pumped magnetometers – OPM), and initial tests of its operation in the quality control of automotive batteries are to be carried out.
The project has been successfully completed.
