Compact Frequency Reference
Atom interferometers are considered promising quantum sensors of the future. They enable highly precise measurements of rotation, acceleration or gravity and are therefore of great importance, for example, for navigation applications on land, at sea or in the air. The basis of their accuracy is an extremely stable reference frequency that precisely controls the interaction between atoms and laser pulses.
This is where the QVLS-iLabs project KOFREFpro comes in. The goal is to develop a compact and cost-effective system that provides highly accurate frequency references for quantum sensors – also in mobile applications. The required stability is transferred via global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and secured in real time through intelligent correction methods. This eliminates the need for dedicated, complex reference systems on site.
In the current project phase, an integrated hardware module is being developed that combines frequency generation as well as control and regulation electronics in a compact system. The goal is to demonstrate a practical solution and thus take an important step towards the commercialization of highly precise frequency references for quantum sensing and other applications.
