Quantum-based Pressure Standards

Precise measurements of pressure and temperature are a fundamental prerequisite for industrial processes, research and metrology standards. Conventional reference systems are often based on mechanical or hydrostatic methods that are complex, difficult to transport and only suitable to a limited extent for use outside laboratory environments.

The QVLS-iLabs project QPS is developing novel quantum technology-based measurement systems that determine pressure through the optical measurement of gas density while simultaneously controlling and determining temperature with high precision. In the future, the instruments will serve both as compact sensors and as traceable reference standards directly in the application.

By using laser-based measurement techniques and traceability to natural constants, the systems being developed enable higher accuracy, an extended measurement range – particularly at low pressures – as well as eliminating the need for complex calibration procedures. QPS thus creates the basis for modern, robust and widely applicable quantum sensing in industry, research and metrology.
